Say hello

I do not like remote work. I find it hard to focus at home, and lose track of time. It is already 4 PM when I realize that I haven’t eaten anything yet (I do not eat breakfast).
So I like coming to the office.

Typical daily schedule

Lots of coworkers come to the office. They are often the same ones who do not work (or do not like to work) remotely.
The office layout is somehow very flexible. People can sit anywhere there are seats available. For people who come every day, like me, we have our own “dedicated” desk.

So people come in:

  • sit at a desk
  • have breakfast and coffee
  • do their work and attend meetings
  • eat lunch alone or together
  • do their work and attend meetings
  • finish, go home

In this schedule, during daytime, they may miss people sitting in another part of the office, or speak with people outside their “regular” team.

Wandering around

Instead, my morning routine when I come is:

  • grab my mug (I have a dedicated Yoshi mug)
  • tour the office before going to the breakfast area
  • note who has arrived and who has not say hello to everybody on the way, having some (very brief) small talk
  • grab my tea, and start working and attending meetings, … like anybody else
  • as I do not have breakfast and prefer eating late to avoid too long a queue in the kitchen, I often eat later than 1 PM… so between 12 PM and 1 PM is the perfect time to focus and do some work when other people are eating!
  • wander around the office thinking about some random problems, talking to people along the way
  • and so on
  • eventually also go home

Sometimes I am not at my desk for some time. I am just wandering around. Walking randomly helps me think.
But on the way, I try to make connections by saying hello to people every day. It is not just a matter of being polite.
